And on some days, just getting out of bed can feel impossible.

Understanding Depression

Below are some common symptoms that can arise when someone is battling depression. Remember, experiencing one or more of these symptoms doesn't automatically mean you have depression, but they could be signs that it's time to reach out for help and support.

● Loss of Interest: Finding it tough to engage in once-beloved activities.

● Fatigue and Low Energy: Constant exhaustion, even with adequate rest.

● Sleep Pattern Changes: Difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, or oversleeping.

● Appetite Changes: Drastic changes in eating habits, such as suddenly eating too much or too little

● Feelings of Worthlessness: Overwhelming self-doubt and feelings of burden.

● Difficulty Concentrating: Struggling to focus on tasks or decisions.

● Irritability: Quick temper and low frustration tolerance.

EMDR Therapy

Discover A New Type Of Healing

Life can be a beautiful journey, but for many of us, it comes with its share of challenges and traumas. If you've experienced events or situations that have left you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck, know that you don't have to carry the weight of your past alone. At Lighter Living Counseling, our trauma therapists are here to support you on your path to healing, recovery, and renewed hope.

Trauma therapy is a safe and compassionate space where you can begin to unravel the emotional knots that trauma has tied in your life. We understand that trauma can manifest in countless ways, from anxiety and depression to PTSD and other mental health challenges. Our team is here to help you navigate these complexities with care and expertise.

What Does Trauma Therapy Look Like?

One of the first steps on your healing journey is understanding the impact of trauma on your life. Our trauma therapists are skilled at guiding you through this process, helping you identify the source of your pain, and exploring the ways it has affected your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. With this knowledge, you can begin to regain control and empower yourself to create a brighter future.

How Can EMDR Help Relieve Your Trauma?

We offer specialized sessions using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidenced-based therapy for those with trauma, anxiety, OCD, and phobias. EMDR is a powerful and client-centered treatment that uses the brain’s natural ability to adapt and resolve issues as a means of healing

Trauma tends to live in the body, contributes to negative thinking, and greatly affects how we view ourselves, relationships, and the world. When you experience distress and/or trauma, your body’s stress response, the fight-flight-freeze-fawn response, is triggered and that distress and/or trauma is then physically stored in your body. If you live with a lot of stress, chances are that your stress response is in overdrive regularly, causing you to feel ‘stuck’ and easily overwhelmed, and can negatively influence your ability to function in your daily life.

EMDR is unique in that it allows you to reprocess difficult memories and experiences without requiring you to re-live or talk in great detail about the memory, which removes the chance of rehashing or re-traumatizing yourself throughout the healing process. With EMDR, you will not forget your memories or experiences, but you will reprocess your memories or experiences in a way that allows you to reduce the emotional response you have and develop new ways of understanding them so that you can heal & move forward in your life.

Therapy Sessions Unique To Your Needs

Every individual's experience with trauma is unique, and we believe that your healing journey should reflect that uniqueness. Our trauma therapists will work with you to create a personalized

treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and goals. This tailored approach ensures that you receive the support and guidance that is most effective for you.

Our team is dedicated to providing you with the tools and strategies you need to build resilience and find confidence and trust in yourself once again. We believe in the incredible strength of the human spirit and its capacity to heal. Throughout your journey with us, we'll emphasize the message that there is always hope, even in the darkest of moments. You are not defined by your trauma, and with our support, you can reclaim your life.

When considering EMDR therapy, we want to focus on building therapeutic trust with you to create an environment of safety and connection. We will also help you tap into various coping strategies so that you feel prepared to start the reprocessing of your traumatic/negative memories.

Only You Can Define Your Future

You don't have to carry the weight of your past alone. Reach out to our practice, and take the first step towards healing the mental and emotional wounds you have been forced to carry. We're ready to support you on your journey, and we're committed to providing you with the tools and guidance you need to find your inner strength and move towards a brighter future.

Trauma may have shaped your past, but with the right tools and resources it doesn't have to define your future. Our trauma therapists are here to help you discover the restorative power within you and find the optimism you deserve. Get in touch with us today and let's start your journey toward a life of resilience, empowerment, and promise.

EMDR has been extensively researched and is backed by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, the Department of Veterans Affairs and many more as an effective treatment for trauma and other mental health disorders like depression, chronic pain, and addiction. Child Psychological Evaluations

Receive clarity to enhance support for your child’s challenges.

Are you concerned about your child’s performance at home or school? Are you beginning to worry that your child may struggle socially, emotionally, or behaviorally? Evaluations can assess children for developmental delays, learning disorders, mood/behavior disorders, gifted academic performance, and standardized testing accommodation needs. A comprehensive evaluation could help provide clarity to support your child through his or her daily challenges.

Our child psychologist utilizes a variety of assessments to thoroughly understand the challenges your child encounters. In doing so, specific recommendations and treatment options will be outlined to best support your child at home and school. Children between the ages of 6 to 24 are eligible for psychological evaluations.

What to Expect

A psychological evaluation may take three to ten hours to conclude, depending on the type of testing. For your child to perform their best, several sessions and breaks may be necessary to maintain attention and concentration. The evaluation will include a detailed intake of your child’s history (e.g., social, academic, family, and developmental) and various standardized psychological and academic tests. The evaluation may also include school observation and teacher interviews as needed. Lastly, reviewing your child’s academic or medical records and consulting with appropriate professionals may be necessary. A final report will be shared with you during an in-depth feedback session to discuss any diagnoses and specific recommendations for your child.

Are you ready to look further into what may be underlying your child’s challenges? We’d be happy to be part of the process of evaluating and supporting your child’s development. To set up an evaluation for your child, please call or text to start the process! 754-308-5525

Pre-Teen and Teen Counseling

Getting through the pre-teen and adolescent years can be overwhelming. Let us help!

Most teens experience difficulties with peer pressure, family conflict, self-esteem, decision making and controlling their emotions. At Lighter Living Counseling, we strive to create a safe and supportive space where teens can feel comfortable enough to open up and talk about what they're going through.

Since the teenage years can affect the whole family system, we encourage family members to participate in sessions as well. Our therapy approach is collaborative, empathetic, supportive, and non-judgmental in order to help your teen and family explore and create sustainable solutions.

What to Expect

As a parent/guardian, your top priority is making sure your teen is healthy, happy and safe. With teen counseling, we collaborate with you so we can achieve all of the above for your child. Adolescent therapy focuses on the individual and unique needs of your teen, to assure their safety. We also explore the goals of your teen and family in order to equip them to manage their emotions, use positive coping strategies and engage in effective communication skills. The relationships your teen has with their family, friends and self are also a vital part of the therapeutic process.

I’m not sure how to fit therapy in my schedule or how I’ll be able to afford it?

This is a common concern that people have when seeking therapy. We offer a flexible schedule that includes mornings, evenings, and weekend sessions in order to accommodate the high demands of parent’s work/life balance, school, and busy schedules. Therapy is a financial commitment, however, there’s no better investment than investing in your teen's emotional and mental well-being. We are also willing to discuss need-based sliding scale options to accommodate your situation.

Does Insurance Cover Adolescent Therapy?

We have chosen not to be in-network providers with insurance companies in order to protect the confidentiality of our clients. Most insurance companies require the release of your confidential health records in order to cover your services, and even a mental health diagnosis which can affect the quality of therapy you receive.

If you would like to use your out of network insurance, we can provide a “superbill” for you to submit to your insurance company. This process is done with the intention that you receive reimbursement based on your plan. If this is something you would like to do, please let me know.

Is My Teen’s Counseling Confidential?

If your child is under the age of 18, you have a right to be informed on your teen’s therapeutic process. However, I practice a confidential approach with my teenage clients in order to build rapport and therapeutic trust. If teenagers know that everything they say in the therapy is being communicated with their parents or guardians, it can keep them from opening up. They are much less likely to talk about issues that are private and important to them, which can hinder their progress.

Limitations to this confidentiality are as follows:

– If the clinician determines the teenager to be at a high risk for suicide, severe self-harm, or homicide/the intent to harm others, the therapist will need to break confidentiality with the teen at this time in order to assure the safety of the teen and others. The necessary steps to keep the teenager and others safe will be taken.

– We are also legally mandated to report child abuse and neglect. If the teenager discloses any instances of child abuse or neglect a report is legally required to be made by the therapist to the Florida Child Abuse Hotline for further investigation by the Department of Children and Families (DCF).

Therapy for Eating Disorders

Are You Suffering From Disordered Eating?

Are you or someone you care about trapped in the relentless grip of an eating disorder? It's a battle that can feel lonely and overwhelming, but here at Lighter Living Counseling, we stand as your guiding light, ready to illuminate your path to recovery. Our team of compassionate therapists specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, and we're committed to helping individuals regain control of their lives, conquer the challenges of these disorders, and rediscover the confidence and health they deserve.

Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders encompass a spectrum of conditions, each with distinct characteristics: ● Anorexia Nervosa: Identified by heavily restricting the amount of calorie intake set in motion by a constant fear of weight gain or distorted body image.

● Bulimia Nervosa: Involves a cycle of binge eating followed by compensatory acts (including purging, exercise, laxatives, or fasting) that can negatively affect an individuals physical health.

● Binge-Eating Disorder: Frequent episodes of overeating without compensatory acts (purging, exercise, laxatives, or fasting), leading to guilt and distress.

● ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder): Selective eating and avoidance of certain foods, textures, or smells without concerns about weight or body image. ● Orthorexia: An obsession with "healthy" eating, often leading to disregard of other aspects of an individual's health and life.

● OSFED (Other Specified Eating Disorder) – experiences significant distress due to symptoms that are similar to the above disorders but does not meet full criteria for a diagnosis of these other eating disorders.

Each disorder presents unique challenges, but they all share the potential for severe physical and psychological consequences, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and a tailored and collaborative treatment.

Living with an eating disorder can be an especially isolating experience. From anorexia nervosa's relentless pursuit of thinness to the binge-purge cycle of bulimia, and the emotional turmoil of binge eating disorder, these conditions affect not only the physical but also the emotional and psychological well-being of those who experience them.

Our Approach To Eating Disorders

Compassionate and Empowering: We understand that living with an eating disorder can be an isolating and distressing experience. That's why our therapy approach is rooted in compassion, empathy, and empowerment. Our therapists are committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can openly express your thoughts and feelings. We are able to work collaboratively with experienced nutritionists and psychiatrists to help you develop the tools and strategies needed to navigate your journey toward recovery and all aspects of the disorder.

We take the time to understand your specific challenges, needs, and goals. With this knowledge, we craft a therapy plan that aligns with your unique needs and aspirations.
